Advertising your business can be one hectic and expensive journey to take. Trying to find the right media, in the right market, at the right price might not be easy. There are some free methods you can use to advertise your business.
We’ll deal with online advertising for now. When it comes to advertising your business online you may have looked into posting classified ads, banner advertising, signature taglines and goodwill posting. We’ll touch on all four types of advertising in this article.
Banner advertising is one of the BEST ways to get your business seen on the web. Banners can be colorful, informative and put some “action” into your marketing plan. If you don’t know how to make a banner yourself try to find a graphic artist who will make one for you. Banner ads can be any size or shape, but there are a few basic pixel sizes, which include:
468 x 60 (rectangular)
120 x 120 (box)
120 x 240 (tall box)
There are a few things to keep in mind when making (or commissioning) a banner that will be used to advertise your business.
Keep It Simple – make sure your banner is easy to view. Don’t have detailed backgrounds, a lot of small text or anything that can be confusing. Remember that your banner will only be viewed for two to three seconds. Make it easy to understand and remember!
Use Color – since your banner will only be viewed for a few seconds use a bit of bold color when designing your banner. Even if you use a white background you might want to put some small colorful graphics or colored text in the banner. The eye is attracted to color so use that in your design.
Try to get your banner placed on websites that sell or talk about items that are close to your business goals. If you sell soap you may want your banner on gift basket websites. If you sell children’s clothing you may want your banner on websites that deal with parenting topics.
You may also want to look into banner exchanges. You can use a banner exchange where you trade your banner for the banner from another website. Each website owner (you and the other site owner) agree to put each other’s banner on the respective sites. Another banner exchange might work where you upload your banner to a server and it is rotated on many different websites along with scores or hundreds of others. Many of these rotating banner exchanges are offered free of charge.
SIGNATURE FILES
Using signature files/taglines are a great way to get your business advertised without spending a cent. Each e-mail you send out to people can be a potential sales tool. People tend to read signature files and if that leads to a click, which in turn leads to a sale, that would be the goal.
If you do decided to use a signature file try to keep it five lines or less. If you make it too long you’ll lose the reader’s interest and it will be counterproductive. Also, if using the signature lines on e-mail discussion lists check to see the list rules for using signature lines. Some may have limits to the amount of lines you can use and some might not allow them to be used at all.
When it comes to your own private e-mails the sky is the limit when it comes to setting up a signature line, but remember to keep it simple and easy to read. An example of a signature line is below:
Belver
E-mail: BelverBears@aol.com
Website: http://www.belverbears.us
AOL Screen Name: BbearsChat
“Where Cuddles & Huggs Abound!”
Your signature line should contain your name, e-mail address, website URL, and screen names you think might be helpful. You may also want to include a word or phrase that you want people to read.
Some e-mail programs allow you to have different e-mail signatures that you can use for different purposes.
BE HELPFUL & YOU MIGHT GET “GOODWILL” CLICKS
Another free way to advertise your business is to join e-mail discussion lists and talk to people! You’d be surprised how many people will click on your website because you gave help to someone or have become an integral part of an e-mail discussion list. Try to find lists that are close to your area of business and be a helper!
Once you join the list don’t “spam” the readers by posting an advertisement on the list. You’re not there for that. Your next question might be, “Well, if I don’t post an ad how am I going to get traffic to my website?” The answer to that is easy. Be a help to people on the list. Be willing to share your knowledge and experience with them. This will gather goodwill for you and your business as you move across the net. The main goal in this method of “advertising” is to help people and the website clicks (the harvest) rest will come from whatever “goodwill seeds” you have planted
